Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Kristin Cavallari Shine On VMA Red Carpet

Taylor Lautner and Chace Crawford hold it down for the guys, while Lady Gaga's ensemble was simply stunning.

For the Video Music Awards, celebrities always turn up the style wattage. And on the red carpet at this year's VMAs, the girls decided that the more shine they had on their dresses, the better.

Kristin Cavallari wore her hair back in a sleek ponytail with a lovely silver strapless dress. Speaking of silver, Katy Perry looked amazing in a to-die-for flapper-style, asymmetrical dress, paired with her big hair in a perfectly glamorous way.

VMA nominee Leighton Meester (Cobra Starship's "Good Girls Go Bad") also rocked the silver. She wore a cap-sleeve minidress with silver printing. The look was lightened up by her hair down in loose waves.

But if anyone did the whole silver trend right, it was Best Female Video winner Taylor Swift. Her gown had asymmetrical draping and a low-slung back, and it hugged her body in all the right places. She really upped the glam (as if the dress alone weren't glam enough) with red lipstick.

Pink and Shakira also got in on the metallic trend — accidentally showing up in the same dress. But the leather-and-metal dress looked phenomenal on both girls, so we give them credit for making it work.

In addition to a lot of silver, there was a lot of black. Nelly Furtado's little black dress had a draped neck with lots of sparkles. "The City" star Olivia Palermo looked downtown chic in her silk black dress with cutout shoulder detailing. She put a spin on it by wearing a leopard belt and studded shoes.

"Twilight" star Ashley Greene, who was MTV News' fashion correspondent on the red carpet, paired her black tank with a cranberry skirt, black tights and patent-leather black shoes. Paramore's Hayley Williams wore black but kept it punk by mixing a leather mini-skirt with white satin and a black T-shirt.

The guys also looked great. Chace Crawford looked dapper in his navy suit. The not-wearing-a-tie trend was carried on by Taylor Lautner in a gray suit and black shirt. And the "bold fashion choice for the men" award goes to All-American Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter, who wore a bright-pink suit.

But the most shocking look of the night was most certainly Lady Gaga's. Her gold "Phantom of the Opera"-esque mask, designer neck brace (which fans of her "Paparazzi" video may recognize) and a black, Victorian dress with feathers were only made more incredibly absurd with a pink splash in her hair and big hat. Plus, Kermit the Frog was her date.
